Prohibited from participating in expeditions that collected seafloor data because she was a woman, Tharp processed the data, developed detailed maps, and revealed a massive underwater mountain range spanning from the north to the south Atlantic.
Possessing a large central valley, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was consistent with the model of continental drift, where the valley resulted from the seafloor spreading apart from the ridge.
Support later came from Tharp's colleague, Howard Foster, who mapped the locations of earthquakes and found strong agreement with where Tharp had identified ridges—a finding that was consistent with the theory of plate tectonics.
Skeptical of the work after it was presented, famed filmmaker Jacques Cousteau set out to film the ocean floor where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge was said to be found, only to validate Tharp's maps.
