Six pigeons were trained to detect cancer from looking at CT scans—now that work is the basis for training new AI medical tools.

  1. Some research suggests radiologists may miss roughly three out of 10 abnormalities on scans. Yet a radiologist's non-conscious brain may still detect these missed spots—with eye-activity monitoring suggesting that their eyes linger on the problem spots and their pupils widen.

  2. Trained pigeons have proved that they are adept at spotting subtle abnormalities that humans may miss with their conscious brains.

  3. The birds can pick up several types of abnormalities that could require follow-up, including cancerous nodules, arguably enhancing human judgment by detecting visual cues on the scans that may be missed by radiologists' conscious brains.

  4. Researchers hope that medical AI could similarly be trained to pick up non-conscious cues about abnormalities—learning from radiologists' eye movements to enhance human judgment and eventually alert radiologists to abnormalities detected by both conscious and non-conscious brain processes.
