In 2024, the US government owed more than $1T in interest payments on its debt. Subtracting the earnings the Treasury made on government investments, the total interest paid was $882B, roughly equivalent to the amount spent on defense.

The national debt consists of money owed to private investors who have purchased Treasury securities and money owed by one sector of the government to another. They’re respectively called public debt and intragovernmental debt.
