Cancers may have different prognoses—even with the same stage descriptor—depending on their location in the body and currently available treatments, with cancer stages characterized by different number and letter combinations.
Stage 0 means abnormal cells haven’t spread, while Stage 1 indicates further progression, but the cancerous cells have remained localized. Stages 2 and 3 typically indicate an increase in tumor size and spread to nearby lymph nodes or tissues. Stage 4 indicates metastasis, meaning cancer has spread to distant organs.
