The earliest evidence of cancer was found in a 1.7-million-year-old fossil—discovered in the toe of an ancestor of modern-day humans.

  1. Cancer has existed as long as humans have, with some of the earliest evidence found among fossilized bone tumors, human mummies in ancient Egypt, and ancient manuscripts.

  2. The oldest cancer discovery, reported in the journal Science in 2016, was discovered in a cave in South Africa. Scientists believe the toe belonged to one of the early hominins, either Homo ergaster or Paranthropus robustus.
