In 1948, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game used leftover parachutes from World War II to airdrop 76 beavers into the Frank Church Wilderness as part of a relocation project.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Boise State Public Radio

  1. To manage the beaver population in the McCall and Payette Lake area, where people moved in the 1940s, Operation High-Dive involved rehoming trapped beavers by flying them over the Chamberlain Basin before releasing them in specially designed wooden boxes to withstand the impact.

  2. Beavers were transported by plane at an estimated cost of $30 for every four beavers because many areas of the Idaho wilderness did not have roads.

  3. Since 1948, the displaced beaver population in the Frank Church Wilderness has thrived and helped shape the habitat, supporting many other species by creating wetlands via the construction of dams.
