In a single 24-hour span at the Great Falls in Montana, Lewis reportedly was nearly bitten by a rattlesnake, attacked by a wolverine, charged by a bison, and chased by a grizzly bear.
Lewis and Clark's scientific contributions went largely unrecognized in their lifetimes, since Lewis died before finishing his planned account, and the 1814 published journals of the journey omitted most of their zoological findings.
It wasn't until 1893 that a new edition of the expedition journals properly credited the men as scientific pioneers.
