Jean Baptiste Charbonneau was born to Sacagawea and her husband, fur trapper Toussaint Charbonneau, during the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
In 1823, a German aristocrat named Paul of Württemberg met Charbonneau and brought him to Europe, where he lived for several years before returning to America.
Charbonneau spent his later years as a guide and prospector in the West and died of an illness in 1866 while traveling to the Montana gold fields.
