In 1945, 11.5 million people visited the country's national parks; nine years later, that number was 47.8 million.
As the American road trip became a popular vacation option, the national parks were overwhelmed by the influx of tourists and in dire need of repair, with an article in Harper's Magazine calling the situation "nationally disgraceful."
Mission 66—a 10-year, $1B initiative—was launched to respond to public interest by improving and expanding the parks' facilities.
Mission 66 was a success and was responsible for much of the modern architecture found in the parks today.
