When signing the Paris agreement, almost 200 nations committed to pursuing efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, based on guidance from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Additional insights we found via BBC World Service

  1. The 2015 international treaty involved almost all of the world's nations agreeing to cut greenhouse gas emissions and achieve net zero, where the amount of gases produced is balanced by the amount actively removed.

  2. While individual months or spans of months have exceeded the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold since the agreement, the target requires the average temperature to be higher over several years and has thus not been breached as of 2026.

  3. The 1.5 degree Celsius threshold, and, to a greater extent, the 2 degrees Celsius limit, represent climate "tipping points" where irreversible climate damage is expected, including increased risks to food security, loss of all coral reefs, higher sea levels as glaciers and ice sheets melt, increased species extinctions, and more people exposed to extreme heat and climate-sensitive diseases, such as dengue.

  4. Extreme weather patterns, such as heatwaves, floods, and droughts, are also expected, as higher global temperatures allow the atmosphere to hold more moisture and seawater to expand as it heats up, increasing volatility.
