One of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems, the Great Barrier Reef stretches more than 1,400 miles down Australia's eastern coast and covers an area roughly equal to Italy
The reef is home to more than 1500 species of fish, 600 coral species, and dozens of whale and dolphin species
There are as many as 1,200 shipwrecks along the reef, stretching back more than three centuries (though many have never been located)
Rising temperatures from climate change have significantly impacted the reef, causing six major coral bleaching events since 2016
This site (best viewed on desktop) takes you through the reef's structure and history, view and listen to the organisms that make the reef their home, and simulate the evolution of the ecosystem
