Additional insights we found via Smithsonian Magazine

  1. Scholars have long known that Dickens and his wife, Catherine, separated after he began an affair with 18-year-old actress Ellen Ternan, something Dickens implied was partially due to his wife's "mental disorder."

  2. In 2019, University of York professor John Bowen discovered a trove of letters between one of the Dickens' neighbors and a journalist, relaying some of Catherine's side of the story, which suggests that Dickens tried to have her institutionalized against her will.

  3. Previously, scholars were aware of accounts from Catherine's aunt that suggested the same, though some doubted them as forgeries.
