Scientists can create movies of atomic and molecular phenomena using X-ray free-electron lasers, in which images are produced by matter being struck by high-intensity light created by accelerating electrons.

Findings

Additional insights we found via SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory

  1. Within an XFEL, electrons are injected into a linear accelerator and sped up to near-light speed by electromagnetic fields before they are directed into wiggling patterns, which produce ultrafast, high-intensity X-rays.

  2. Just as a camera's flash produces specific shadow patterns based on how imaged objects block light, ultrafast X-rays create patterns upon striking matter, which can be used to reconstruct the structures of atoms and proteins and to reveal molecular phenomena when combined into a movie.

  3. The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory's Linac Coherent Light Source produces 120 X-ray pulses per second—each lasting quadrillionths of a second or less—to quickly capture atoms in motion during chemical reactions and the molecular structures of proteins involved in the transmission of various diseases, including African sleeping sickness, Dengue fever, and the Zika virus.
