Additional insights we found via The Conversation

  1. Researchers analyzed 9M death certificates from January 2020 to December 2022 and found that those professions fared better than others. The finding, published in 2024, was not consistent across other driving-based professions.

  2. One theory is that this type of hippocampus-intensive work helps bolster that area of the brain, providing some buffering against the degradation that typically occurs there with Alzheimer's. The hippocampus is known to facilitate spatial memory, including navigation.

  3. Other research has separately found that consistently engaging in complex mental tasks is associated with lower dementia risk.

  4. London taxi drivers famously must memorize 25,000 streets within a 6-mile radius of Charing Cross to earn a license, and a famous London taxi driver neuroscience study comparing some of these licensed drivers with people who did not drive cabs found significant structural differences in the hippocampus between the two groups.
