The term 'scientist' was coined in a 1834 book review by English polymath William Whewell, who needed an alternative to 'man of science' to describe Scottish writer Mary Somerville.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Paul Craddock

  1. Prior to Somerville's "On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences," a text that discussed the connections between the various scientific disciplines, those who worked in scientific fields also used terms such as naturalists, natural philosophers, and cultivators of science to describe themselves.

  2. The term "scientist" was modeled on the same structure as artist, sciolist—a person who pretends to be knowledgeable—economist, and atheist, all of which were titles with negative connotations, thus contributing to the delayed adoption of the new term.

  3. Prior to settling on "scientist," Whewell had considered "savant," but opted against it because it was arrogant and French.
