Tom Liggett, a Bournemouth University student, sent photographic film into space using a helium balloon, producing photographs from cosmic rays—high-energy particles traveling through space at near-light speed.

Findings

Additional insights we found via BBC

  1. By rising above the protective ozone layer, the film became exposed to cosmic rays—high-energy particles traveling through space at near-light speed—the exotic particles produced by collisions between cosmic rays and atmospheric particles, and UVC radiation from the sun.

  2. After an exposure, the balloon exploded, returning the sealed bag of film to Earth, where it was developed.
