Brooks reworked his 1967 Oscar-winning film, a satire about a ridiculous ploy to produce a horrible musical called "Springtime for Hitler," for the stage, sharpening it into a metacommentary on the theater industry.
After opening with stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, the show broke the record for one-day box-office theater sales, bringing in more than $3M in sales.
The show went on to win 12 Tonys that year, including best musical, surpassing the previous record of 10 set by "Hello Dolly."
Brooks went on to pen a film version of "The Producers" based on the musical and starring Lane and Broderick; it was released in 2005.
