The comedian was with the 1104th Engineer Combat Group during the campaign; his unit had to fight as infantry on five occasions.
Brooks had been drafted into the Army in 1944 and, due to his high scores on the military's entrance exam, was sent to the Army Specialized Training Program at the Virginia Military Institute before being deployed.
Brooks said that seeing Jewish refugees who escaped concentration camps as the war came to an end had a profound effect on him.
