Additional insights we found via Jared Owen

  1. Once constructed in the Vehicle Assembly Building—the tallest single-story building in the world—a shuttle stack would be moved to the launch pad via the mobile launch platform and crawler-transporter at less than half a kilometer per hour.

  2. Once on one of two launch pads at the site, the external tank was fueled and astronauts entered the orbiter as tests were run to ensure systems were ready for launch.

  3. At T-minus zero seconds, the main engines and solid rocket boosters generated a combined 7.3 million pounds of thrust, just as eight hold-down bolts detonated, freeing the shuttle to take off.

  4. Shortly after two minutes had elapsed since liftoff, the solid rocket boosters detached and fell back to Earth with parachutes for collection and reuse.

  5. About 8 minutes and 30 seconds after liftoff, the external tank, which had provided fuel for the orbiter's engines to continue the ascent after the SRBs were lost, detached from the orbiter and fell to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere.

  6. Without the external tank for fuel, two Orbital Maneuvering System engines, each with its own fuel, provided additional thrust and prevented the orbiter from falling back into the atmosphere.
