In 1980, Steven Spielberg added a scene depicting the interior of an alien spaceship to a rerelease of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' at the studio's request, but later regretted the decision, believing it depleted the movie's enchanting mystery.

The original 1977 cut ends with Richard Dreyfuss' character entering the alien spacecraft, allowing the audience to decide for themselves what it might look like inside.
After the film was a hit, Spielberg returned to the studio, Columbia Pictures, and asked for funding to add scenes that had been shelved due to time constraints; the studio agreed, as long as Spielberg agreed to add a scene showing the interior of the alien spaceship, which they believed would motivate fans to return to the theater.
Spielberg later regretted the decision, saying, “that should have always been kept a mystery, the inside of that ship.”
