For much of his life, Hockney was known for paintings that used bright colors and often depicted idyllic life in Los Angeles.
In 2008, he began experimenting with making art on his iPhone; by the early 2010s, he was regularly drawing on his iPad, appreciating the ability to work quickly and outside of a studio.
A 2010 collection of iPad works called "The Yosemite Suite" drew attention for its impressionistic portraits of the national park.
A 2012 retrospective featured several of his iPad works, including "The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate"; 17 of the drawings were auctioned.
