Additional insights we found via HISTORY

  1. A lock-and-lake system is a series of lock chambers and barriers used to raise and lower watercraft between different water levels on rivers, canals, or interconnected lake systems.

  2. The system centered on Gatun Lake, the largest human-made reservoir at the time, and two massive concrete locks that raised ships 85 feet from sea level to the lake surface.

  3. The excavation was also the largest earth-moving project at the time, moving 240 million cubic yards of soil.
