Working conditions on the Panama Canal, built between 1904 and 1914, were abysmal, with thousands of workers dying on the job.

Findings

Additional insights we found via PBS

  1. More than 75,000 workers labored on the project, the vast majority of whom were from Panama or the West Indies.

  2. Tasks included digging ditches, cutting brush, carrying lumber, operating rock drills or fumigation equipment, or dynamiting.

  3. As many workers deserted the job, the commission overseeing construction built schools, YMCAs, and a bakery for the workers, as well as comfortable two-story homes with iceboxes, modern plumbing, and electricity.
