While working at the Brill Building, Carole King became one of the architects of the classic girl group sound, penning hits like the Shirelles' "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" and the Chiffons' "One Fine Day."
"He Hit Me" was based on something a babysitter King had hired said; King and her husband, Gerry Goffin, used it as inspiration, with King writing the music and Goffin penning the lyrics.
Producer Phil Spector had the Crystals record "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)," despite the group's discomfort with the subject matter.
The song performed poorly on the charts and King later expressed regret for taking part in composing it, saying, "... that’s one song I kind of wish I hadn’t had any part of writing."
