The wax cylinder featuring the recording was found by John Levin, a collector, in a batch of recordings sold at an auction in Pennsylvania's coal country.
Wax cylinders were the earliest medium for recorded sound, though they were imperfect, with a limited sound range and a tendency to be easily damaged.
The ewax cylinder had very little identifying information, but Levin used its shape and sound to determine that it was from 1890s New Orleans.
Eventually, Levin identified the singer in the recording, Louis Vasnier, a Black New Orleans resident who performed vaudeville.
