Nolan wanted to use IMAX, which allows for much larger shots and more immersive audio, given the source material's epic scope, saying, "It needed to be the biggest film that we had done ... because that's the nature of the story."
Nolan prefers human-made special effects to computer-generated ones, famously collapsing an entire building for a scene in "The Dark Knight."
Nolan grew up shooting home movies on a Super 8 camera, reenacting Hollywood blockbusters like "Star Wars" with his younger brother Jonathan, who's also a director.
