Five patterns may define how we sleep—not just night owl or early bird.

Findings
Additional insights we found via Scientific American
Research published in 2025 suggests there are five sleeping subtypes, each with its own specific brain-imaging patterns, behaviors, and health implications.
Three of the sleeping subtypes are different flavors of "night owls," distinguished by different risk-taking behaviors. The other two are different "early bird" categories—one a classical early bird, and the other a "female-biased" early bird that was more prone toward depressive symptoms and other health complications.
Researchers concluded classical early birders were healthiest overall, with the best behavioral choices, emotional stability, and brain efficiency. Various factors including genetics, hormones, and environment likely contribute to where each of us lands, but how they interplay remains unknown.
