The name was coined by Bob Stanford ahead of its 1966 debut in two flavors, Coca-Cola and cherry.
The original slushy drink was created by Omar Knedlik, the operator of a Kansas City Dairy Queen, who put soda in a freezer when his Dairy Queen's soda fountain broke; Knedlik later developed the technology for the ICEE, which would later be licensed by 7-Eleven to create the Slurpee.
A Slurpee's sugar, a natural depressant during freezing, prevents it from turning into a proper cube of ice and instead turns it into a half-frozen slush.
The creator of the frozen margarita machine credits the Slurpee with inspiring his invention.
