Through 2025, two-thirds of known exoplanets—planets that orbit stars other than the sun—have been detected via transits, where the objects cause periodic, consistent dips in their host star's brightness by passing in front of it.

Observing wobbles in a star as it is pulled by an orbiting exoplanet's gravity is the second most common detection method, followed by microlensing and direct exoplanet observation.
Microlensing sees an exoplanet's gravity bend a stream of starlight into an observer's line of sight, causing the star's brightness to temporarily increase in a regular pattern.
