Simulate the precession of Mercury's perihelion—the gradual shift in the closest point of Mercury's path around the sun as its elliptical orbit rotates.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Wolfram

  1. The location of Mercury's closest point to the sun shifts in the sky at approximately 0.16 degrees per century, or 0.012 degrees more than predicted by Isaac Newton, due to the gravity of the other planets.

  2. The accurate prediction of Mercury's precession by Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity contributed to it overturning Isaac Newton's model of gravity.
