In 2014, Russia banned food imported from the United States, the European Union, and other countries; the move was in response to sanctions placed on Russia by other countries looking to punish it for its 2014 annexation of Crimea.
As a show of force, authorities destroyed 900 tons of illegal food on state television.
The country then doubled down on the ban in 2015, expanding the black market that illegally imports American and European food products, many of them stolen.
In May 2020, customs agents at the Russian border seized 70 tons of European cheese in one stop.
