Explore an interactive map of global water gaps, caused by human consumption surpassing the rate at which water reserves are replenished by the hydrologic cycle.

Findings

Additional insights we found via National Geographic

  1. Humans extract 4,000 cubic kilometers of water from natural systems annually—eight times more than a century ago—creating regions where freshwater demand surpasses available reserves.

  2. The depletion of shallow aquifers has driven tapping into deeper, nonrenewable ones, threatening ecosystem and wildlife sustainability.

  3. Globally, as of 2019, a land area roughly the size of Germany is irrigated with non-renewable water, the depletion of which will threaten food security.

  4. About a third of the global population lives under conditions of water scarcity, where demand for water surpasses renewable supply for at least one month in a 12-month period.

  5. In the US, lawns use up about 30% of the domestic water supply, and, in leaks alone, the average home loses over 35,000 liters of water yearly.
