Nintendo's Mario was named after the landlord of the company's American headquarters.

Additional insights we found via The New York Times

  1. The character first appeared in the 1981 game Donkey Kong as Jumpman because his primary purpose was to jump over barrels.

  2. When the game was translated into English, Jumpman’s name was changed to Mario, a nod to Mario Segale, the landlord for Nintendo’s American office.
