Near-death experiences aren’t the only thing they study at the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies, though its primary focus is investigating the possibility of consciousness surviving physical death.
This 2014 story in The Atlantic profiles this University of Virginia unit, founded in 1967. The unit states on its 2026 UVA website that it's "devoted to the rigorous evaluation of empirical evidence for extraordinary human experiences and capacities."
The group also approaches a host of “paranormal” phenomena—like past lives and out-of-body experiences—with academic rigor. It notes that approximately 15% of the general population has had an out-of-body experience and seeks to explore those as well as anecodtal experiences during meditation.
As part of its work, the UVA unit is studying psychedelics, including psilocybin, and exploring how the substances may affect grief and other disorders.
