Medical advances that manage to resuscitate people from comas and cardiac arrests have enabled new research into the brain activity of people experiencing near-death experiences and a new (contested) explanation about why they occur.

Additional insights we found via Nautilus

  1. Charlotte Martial, from the University of Liege, studies near-death experiences. She has recently studied the brain activity of 180 patients on the brink of death and, based partly on this unpublished work, developed a controversial neurophysiological model to explain why NDEs occur which her team calls "NEPTUNE." Twelve of the 180 patients, she says, experienced NDEs.

  2. Martial's explanation, which draws from her unpublished work, is that as we're dying, the oxygen-deprived brain doesn't have energy to power brain cells. That state sets off a cascade of neurochemical mechanisms, including the release of a surge of neurotransmitters in specific parts of the brain associated with memory, perception, and consciousness. The result, she says, may subsequently be experienced as subjective NDE events.

  3. This neurophysiological model, she suggests, indicates that only specific brain areas need to be functionally activated for consciousness to occur.

  4. Her theory also suggests that near-death experiences are an adaptive evolutionary response that allows humans to mentally escape from life-threatening situations when physical escape is not possible.

  5. Not all near-death experiences include feelings of peace or light, but those are most often cited in the research. Martial says there are fewer than 10 published papers on negative NDEs, meaning ones that may include the stuff of nightmares, such as monsters.

  6. People who can successfully disconnect from the environment and stay connected with their internal states, she says, may be more likely to experience near-death experiences.
