A recent study found people revived by CPR after cardiac arrest reported that a portion of these individuals experienced some amount of consciousness during clinical death, suggesting our brains are capable of thought and memory for significantly longer after death than previously thought.
The work, called the AWAreness during REsuscitation (AWARE)-II study, tracked 567 men and women who experienced cardiac arrest during hospital stays between May 2017 and March 2020 in the United States and the United Kingdom. They tracked the electrical brain activity of 85 of the participants.
