Oregon voters in 2020 greenlit adult use of psilocybin—the active ingredient in magic mushrooms—in state-licensed centers, and a 2026 analysis indicates the program has good safety and satisfaction data.

Findings

Additional insights we found via NPR

  1. A study that tracked 350 people who took the drug in one of the state-licensed centers offers the most rigorous analysis of the program to date. It found that most of those people reported their trips improved their mental health and overall adverse events appeared to be roughly equivalent to other psychiatric interventions, according to a researcher not involved with the study.

  2. More than 20,000 people have used the state-licensed centers, so it's possible the 350 people who chose to participate in the study may not have been fully representative of the overall experience, though they did match the socioeconomic statistics of a typical user.

  3. Though adverse reactions were uncommon, the ones that were reported were concerns: A small number of participants said they had new thoughts of dying or suicide after using the drug.

  4. Psilocybin is separately under review at the federal level, alongside several other psychedelics, to treat mental health conditions, including hard-to-treat depression.
