  1. The first iteration of the Isolator was a cork-lined wooden helmet wrapped in felt that, according to inventor Hugo Hugo Gernsback, blocked 75% of environmental sounds.

  2. A revised Isolator replaced the wood of the first version with an air space, which Gernsback believed would more effectively block out sound.

  3. After feeling drowsy from wearing the device for 15 minutes, Gernsback redesigned the helmet to attach to an oxygen tank via a tube, but experts have suggested that replacing the tank every half-hour would've made the oxygen system impractical.
