Findings

Additional insights we found via Indiana University

  1. Indiana University chemist Rolla Harger earned a patent in 1936 for a device measuring blood-alcohol content, dubbed the Drunkometer.

  2. The original device involved individuals blowing into a balloon containing a chemical solution of acidified potassium permanganate that would mix with the breath. Alcohol would cause the solution inside to change color, with darker shades indicating higher alcohol concentrations.

  3. The device was created to help address alcohol-related traffic accidents following the repeal of Prohibition.

  4. Modern Breathalyzers typically use infrared spectroscopy to measure blood alcohol content.
