The Beatles tried to get the rights to make a 'Lord of the Rings' film starring the band members as Gollum, Frodo, Gandalf, and Samwise.

Additional insights we found via Variety

  1. After the success of the Beatles' films "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!" in 1964 and 1965, respectively, the band's film production company went in search of new material, seriously considering adapting JRR Tolkien's massively popular fantasy series for the screen.

  2. The plan was for John Lennon to play Gollum, Paul McCartney to play Frodo, George Harrison to play Gandalf, and Ringo Starr to play Samwise Gamgee.

  3. The band would provide music for the film, which they hoped would be directed by Stanley Kubrick, who'd recently found success with "Dr. Strangelove"; Kubrick, however, considered the books "unfilmable."

  4. JRR Tolkien was not interested in the pitch and declined it.
