Before transistors, which regulate the flow of electricity, vacuum tubes—glass tubes containing no gas that resemble light bulbs—served as the electronic switches in computers.

Findings

Additional insights we found via Veritasium

  1. The use of vacuum tubes as switches was made possible by thermionic emission—the emission of electrons from the heated filament of a lightbulb toward its positive side—which could be harnessed to convert alternating current into electricity that flowed in one direction.

  2. By controlling the flow of electricity with diodes, inventors built various electronic devices, such as radios and long-distance telegram machines, and systems that amplified signals by using a small current to trigger a larger one in a second circuit.

  3. By combining logic-based mathematics with vacuum tubes, computer hardware was built using switches, where on and off represented 1s and 0s.

  4. ENIAC, the first programmable, general-purpose, electronic computer, used nearly 18,000 vacuum tubes to perform computations, including those involved in the development of the hydrogen bomb.
