In 1947, a private pilot named Kenneth Arnold said he saw nine high-speed flying objects near Washington's Mount Rainier.
The story made national news and inspired a rash of similar stories across the country, with many reporting the observation of "saucer-like objects," even though the pilot hadn't described them as such.
Instead, Arnold described the nine unidentified flying objects as moving like stones skipping across water.
In the late '80s and 1990s, people began reporting fewer "flying saucers" and instead mentioned flying triangular objects and "orbs" of light.
