  1. Early efforts to search for living beings in the universe were initially directed at Earth's closest celestial neighbors: the Moon, Mars, and Venus. A large motivation for the search during the Cold War was finding evidence of alien civilizations before others could, and possibly secure a technological advantage.

  2. Other efforts were made to listen for extraterrestrial life, such as August 1924's "National Radio Silence Day" campaign, where citizens were encouraged to turn off their radios for five minutes on the hour, every hour, for three days, coinciding with an event that brought Mars and Earth to their closest distance in a century while scientists listened for signals.
