Light takes approximately eight minutes to travel from the sun's surface to Earth, but it takes thousands of years to reach the star's surface from its core—a distance more than 200 times shorter.

Additional insights we found via TED-Ed

  1. While they travel unimpeded through empty space, photons—particles of light—undergo a random walk as they travel through the sun as they scatter off charged particles like a pinball.

  2. Simulations of the sun's interior show that photons can take as long as 170,000 years to travel from the sun's core, where they are produced via nuclear fusion, to its surface.
