Globular clusters are densely packed, generally spherical groups of thousands or millions of stars, often located in the outer regions of galaxies, and contain some of the oldest stars in a galaxy, thereby giving them a red appearance.
Found in the arms of spiral galaxies like the Milky Way, open clusters are much less dense and more irregularly shaped than globular clusters, and typically contain younger stars.
The precursors to globular and open clusters, embedded clusters are the youngest type of star cluster and are found within clouds of gas actively forming stars.
The sun is thought to have formed about 4.6 billion years ago in a cluster, where orbital instabilities among the stars and gravitational forces from matter in the surrounding galaxy caused it to peel away from its stellar siblings.
Because stars within a cluster form from the same initial molecular cloud, the evolution of each is governed almost exclusively by how much mass they start with, allowing astronomers to determine the age of the cluster based on what stars have not become stellar remnants—a process that begins with the most massive stars and progresses to less massive stars over time.
