The original tongue map, created by German researcher David Pauli Hanig, recorded taste sensitivities reported in psychological studies.
Hanig's taste findings, included in his 1901 thesis, were later translated and taken out of context, possibly giving rise to the faulty tongue map.
Taste receptors in the oral cavity respond to all basic tastes regardless of their location.
