In 1955, British naval historian and author Cyril Northcote Parkinson wrote a satirical essay about an elderly woman who had nothing to do, so she spent an entire day writing a postcard to her niece.
The law itself comes from the opening line of the essay, “It is a commonplace observation that work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
Parkinson pointed out that despite a decrease in overall naval ships in the British fleet between 1914 and 1928, the number of bureaucrats rose during this period.
For many, the law represents the psychological benefits of deadline pressure, often resulting in more focused, intentional, and productive work.
