The Greeks weightlifted using massive stones and admired strength—but viewed muscles differently.

Findings

Additional insights we found via The American Scholar

  1. Ancient Greek art is replete with humans with muscular physiques, but there is very little evidence they knew much about proper weightlifting.

  2. In contrast to modern views, the Greeks likely placed little importance on isolated muscles when trying to build strength. Therefore, actual weightlifting appears to have been uncommon in Greek culture, while wrestling and the movement of whole bodies mattered more.
