Gut microbiome experiments involving transfers of gut microbes from depressed people to rodents indicate that the rodents may then display depression-like symptoms.
Findings
Additional insights we found via TED-Ed
The finding underscores that gut microbes may influence behavior and personality more than previously known.
Scientists theorize that bacteria in our gut—through the hormones and neurotransmitters they produce—can contribute to conditions ranging from depression to anxiety, and much more. The microbes may trigger actions, including an inflammatory response, which influences bodily responses.
Roughly half of the cells in the human body belong to other organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and protozoa, many of which reside in the gut.
