Additional insights we found via AP News

  1. Bedbugs are tiny parasites that feed on people and animals at night. They inject anesthetic and anti-clotting fluids with their bites, which typically prevents their victims from detecting them.

  2. Bites may resemble mosquito or flea bites and may appear in a straight line or in a random pattern.

  3. The parasites—which are about the size of Lincoln's head on a penny—can persist even in a clean environment, hiding in mattresses, luggage seams, folded clothes, furniture, and more.

  4. In 2023, researchers at the University of South Dakota published bedbug research demonstrating that the bugs could acquire antibiotic-resistant MRSA—methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus—during one feeding and spread it during another. The work used blood capsules and artificial skin.

  5. Pesticide companies rank which cities have the worst bedbug problems based on how many calls they receive, and Orkin currently ranks Chicago in the top spot, while Terminix assigned that ranking to Philadelphia.

  6. The pesticide DDT reduced bedbug populations in higher-resource countries after World War II, but it was largely banned in the 1970s.

  7. During travel, before unpacking, experts suggest pulling back the sheets on beds and checking for signs of their presence, including shed exoskeletons, rusty-colored blood spots on mattresses or other furniture, and fecal spots.
